Why a Hybrid System?
In the proper settings, a hybrid system—a combination of multiple renewable energy units—can be the most efficient and cost-effective way to go green. Using a hybrid system is a wonderful way to get more kW production per dollar invested. In most of the U.S., the majority of sunlight comes in the summer months, when the wind blows less. Conversely, the winter months see very little sun and much stronger winds.
Example
At night, the wind blows. In the morning, the sun comes out and the wind dies down. By taking advantage of both peaks of energy, a 4kW solar system with a 3 kW wind turbine will provide more energy than a stand-alone 10 kW wind turbine or solar system, offering more for less.
Interesting Fact
The sun heats the Earth to different temperatures, in different places, at different times. This unequal distribution of heat creates wind as warm air rises and cooler air descends to fill the void. Wind is the ongoing movement of this air.
